HOSPITAL INFORMATION

: Medical care is limited. The main facility is the government-owned Indira Ghandi Memorial Hospital, which provides a broad range of modern medical services, including a 24-hour casualty department (specialist consultations by appointment; tel. 3335335 or 3316647; website http://www.igmh.gov.mv/.

There is also a smaller private facility (Abduarahman Don Kaleyfan Hospital). General, orthopedic, and neurological surgery are performed at both hospitals. Outside Male, there are six regional hospitals, located at Haa Dhaal Kulhuduffushi, Raa Ugoofaaru, Meemu Muli, Laamu Gan, Gaaf Dhaal Thinadhoo and Seenu Hithadhoo.

There are 4 decompression facilities in the Maldives Islands, Island (fifteen minutes by speedboat from Male) Kuramathi (one hour by speed boat and about twenty minutes by air taxi from Male.), and one on Sun Island. Abduarahman Don Kaleyfan Hospital accepts some insurance plans. Most other facilities will expect payment in cash, regardless of whether you have travel health insurance. Serious medical problems will require air evacuation to a country with state-of-the-art medical facilities, usually Singapore. Most resorts have their own doctor on the island.
